Usain Bolt proved once again that he simply has no challengers in the men's 200m event, cruising to victory in a time of 20.03 seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Paris on Friday.

Bolt was facing a field including America's Shaun Crawford and European champion Christophe Lemaitre, but by the time he entered the straight nobody was close to him.

The big Jamaican's world record stands at 19.19s, representing how much he cruised in the latter half of the race to miss that landmark by 0.84s. Bolt was watching himself on the big screen as he crossed the line, a sure sign that he could have bettered the fastest time of the year - currently standing at 19.86s.

Lemaitre took second in a time of 20.21s, with Darvis Patton third.

The success story of the night as far as Great Britain is concerned was undoubtedly Chris Tomlinson, who set a new national record to finish second in the long jump competition. Tomlinson hit his stride from the start, recording leaps of 8.10m and 8.21m, before he set a new national landmark with a jump of 8.35m.

However, he was edged out by Olympic champion Irving Saladino, who produced a jump of 8.40m with his fifth attempt to steal victory. Tomlinson's compatriot Greg Rutherford also finished strongly with a leap of 8.27m, which proved good enough for third.

Jenny Meadows did enough to claim bronze in the women's 800m after a thrilling race that saw the Brit edged out by 0.56s. Meadows crossed the line in a time of 2:00.74, but she was beaten by Caster Semenya and Halima Hachlaf.

Big Olympic medal hope Andy Turner could not deliver though, finishing sixth in the men's 110m hurdles. The current European and Commonwealth champion fell well short of his personal best 13.27s, crossing the line in 13.43s as Dayron Robles edged out David Oliver in a photo finish.

The women's 100m did not have any British representation, but it was won in a time of 10.91s by Kelly-Ann Baptiste, who stunned the Jamaican duo of Veronica Campbell-Brown and Kerron Stewart.

There was disappointment for Michael Bingham in the men's 400m after a time of 45.84s saw him finish sixth. Christopher Brown claimed victory ahead of Jonathan Borlee and Jeremy Wariner, who came fourth, while Bingham's time was equalled by Oscar Pistorius, who competes on blades due to a double amputation.

Elsewhere, Goldie Sayers had to settle for fourth in the women's javelin, after a throw of 62.14. Christina Obergfoell of Germany won the event when she found a distance of 68.01 with her first attempt, and Sayers was left disappointed when she fouled her last throw.

Perri Shakes Drayton also finished just outside the medals as she came fourth in the women's 400m hurdles. Shakes-Drayton will be frustrated with her performance after she failed to post a season's best, coming home in 54.79s as Zuzana Hejnova clocked the fastest time of the year (53.29).

And Andy Baddeley ran a season's best in the men's 1500m, but it was only good enough for 15th place.
