THE Travelling Caribbean Film showcase comes to Jamaica starting this
Sunday, November 28 to Saturday, December 4, 2010. There are 30 films in
the showcase including an animated short film from Jamaica -- Anancy
and Common Sense -- directed and produced by Andrew Davies, and written
by Joan Andrea Hutchinson.
The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture is working with JAMPRO, the
CPTC, Jamaica Library Service, PBCJ and members of the film sector to
stage the showcase.
The Director of Cultural Policy and Monitoring in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Tanya Batson-Savage, said this
year's showcase is very timely given the profile and interest in two
recent major feature films: RiseUp and Better Mus' Come.
"The presence of these two feature films reminds us of the need to focus
on Caribbean stories in the Caribbean landscape, as there is clearly a
growing appetite amongst our Caribbean people for local content.
"Given the dominance of films from the United States in local cinemas,
and the importance of film in maintaining and promoting culture, the
Travelling Caribbean Film showcase, is a meaningful tool for encouraging
a Caribbean film and video industry as well as for highlighting the
diversity and unity of Caribbean culture.
"This showcase gives us an opportunity to spread our lens to the wider Caribbean."
The films are scheduled to be screened at the Sagicor Auditorium in New
Kingston and the Bob Marley Museum in the Corporate Area. Rural Jamaica
has not be left out as screenings will also take place at the St James
Parish Library and the Manchester Parish Library.
The Travelling Caribbean Film showcase was initiated in 2007 with the
participation of 23 countries. It features films/videos in English,
Spanish, French, Dutch and Haitian creole. The showcase provides an
opportunity for Caribbean film-makers and producers to screen their work
to the people of the Caribbean.
