Gay
and lesbian activists are planning to protest against an appearance by
Jamaican performer Capleton in California on Monday night.
They say his lyrics advocate violence against them.
Capleton is scheduled to appear at a nightclub in Sacramento.
Members of Equality Action Now, a civil rights group, have called a press conference for Monday afternoon to outline plans for the protest.
The group says the club in which Capleton will be appearing first agreed to cancel the performance in response to concerns, then
rescheduled it after receiving e-mails from fans who were upset it had
been called off.
This is the second time in a little over a month that Capleton has faced protest by a gay group in the US.
Threats of protest by gay rights activists last month forced the cancellation of a show featuring the artiste in Chicago.
According to an internet report, some persons also felt the singer’s gig was inappropriate following news of a spate of young gay people
committing suicide.
