DJ Khago has dissolved his managerial partnership with Paul ‘Bankey’ Giscombe and is advising the public that Giscombe is no longer authorized to conduct business on his behalf.
“I am the ultimate boss of my career so as of this date, August 14th, I will no longer be represented by Paul Giscombe as his mismanagement of my career has cost me millions in potential earnings and caused me a lot of stress,” Khago, whose real name is Ricardo Gayle, said.
Khago claims that Bankey’s management style was dictatorial as he did not consult with him on most business and booking decisions that affected his career, and alleged that Bankey famously sided with I Octane agaisnt him earlier this year during their long-running feud -- a move that branded him as the antagonist and a troublemaker.
“Him shelve mi career when him tek Octane side when the 'Blood a Boil' song just come out, and worse, him never even consult wid mebefore him go to the paper and say him no agree wid me doing that song. The manstall mi career because from January, mi hardly a get no show, ah just one month ago mi fly for the first time, months after mi have the Nah Sell Out Mi FriendDem, the biggest song inna Jamaica fi 2010,” he said.
"Bankey turned down several shows for me, him cramp me career bad."
Khago also claimed that the first time he flew to do an international show in July, he travelled coach to Bahamas while his manager flew first class.
“Ah history that mek, most people never hear about somethinglike that happening. How the artiste ah travel coach and the manager ah travel first class? How that work? What kind of management is that? How mi ah the hottest artiste inna December, and mi no get no show since January?” he asked.
Khago said that he felt demoralized as a result of Bankey’s actions and the resulting stress has begun to affect his creative output.
“I feel like a slave on a plantation, mi used to love music, but that changed now because ever since mi get Nah Sell Out Mi Friend Dem inna 2010, mi caan smile about it. Bankey ensure say mi stress, that mi no get no joy from music, if me perform on a show and do well, and people come over to compliment or hail mi fi say mi do well, him run dem weh say dem a over-hype the artiste, him never say mi do a good performance yet,” he said.
“Bankey is not operating as a manager, he does not turn up at my shows, the only ones I can remember him attending are the two Reggae Sumfest dem, plus him disorganized, most times, he tells me that I have a show on the day of the show. Him do one interview inna the paper and lick weh mi whole career, but mi a tek charge of my future again; mi a govern my own destiny. I am grateful for what he has done so far to make people know me in the music indusry but mi caan go another day inna this situation. Whatsoever he has spent to further my career, once he has documentation to back it up, I will reimburse him in time,” Khago said.
Khago burst on the dancehall scene two years ago with Caan Cool, however, he got his break last year with Nah Sell Out Mi Friend Dem that hit the #1 spot on several dancehall charts locally and internationally.
