A prisoner accused of using a stone to hit jailed dancehall act Ninjaman in his head, rendering him unconscious, has pleaded not guilty to unlawful wounding.
The accused, 26-year-old Kevin Maitland of St Johns Road in St Catherine, made the plea when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
According to the 48-year-old entertainer, whose real name is Desmond Ballentine, he was returning to his cell at the Horizon Remand Centre in Kingston on the morning of August 3 after taking a shower when the accused used a stone that was in a sock to hit him in the forehead.
Ninjaman, who along with his son, is in jail awaiting trial a charge of murder, said he was knocked unconscious and found himself at the Kingston Public Hospital when he regained consciousness.
Yesterday, when the case was mentioned, the accused denied hitting the entertainer. However, a skinny-looking entertainer, who was dressed only in a vest (merino) and shorts, said otherwise.
After apologising to Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey for his attire, Ninjaman told the court that he saw when Maithland threw the stone at him.
Both men were then remanded into custody and another mention date was set for October 4 due to the pending medical certificate.
