Mighty Crown's 20th anniversary was celebrated in at the Yokohama Reggae Festival last weekend in Japan with thousands of their fans and reggae music loyalists.
According to reports out of Japan, what made this year's celebration special was the performance by iconic reggae artistes Shabba Ranks and Coco Tea. These acts reportedly gave fans an explosive performance. From early on, there was an incredible buzz and excitement surrounding the individual billings of Shabba Ranks and Coco Tea on the same show, among Japan's top reggae acts. But, it is said no one imagined that the two would end up sharing the same stage and performing together for the first time in 15 years.
The reggae artistes unleashed a slew of monstrous combinations on the crowd including Pirates Anthem, Which One She Loves, and Love Me.
Totally impromptu, this set was a treat for all in attendance. "Performing with Shabba in Japan after all this time was like a family reunion...it was wonderful," Coco Tea said. "Our performance was by all means the high point of the show, it was a moment in time."
Together, Shabba Ranks and Coco Tea set the stage on fire.
"When it comes to music making, Coco Tea and I are musical twins...the two of us don't just make hit songs — we make hit records that last through out time," snoted Shabba Ranks. "The energy that I received from sharing the stage with Coco Tea was great enough to supply a whole city with electricity."
Garfield Bourne of promoters Irish and Chin added, "I was thrilled to play a major role in reuniting these two well-known artistes. It is quite possible that out of the thousands in attendance I had the biggest smile on my face... as a result, we are exploring taking this great package on the road."
In addition to the intense combined set of Shabba Ranks and Coco Tea, the artists boasted highly respected individual performances.
The crowd roared when Coco Tea took the stage. Heralded for his flawless vocals and timeless music, Cocoa Tea crooned an extensive set of Dancehall staples like 18 & Over, Rikers Island, She Loves Me Now, Israel's King, and Good Life, among many others.
When Shabba hit the stage, the stadium reported erupted. "The crowd was lunatical and insane," Shabba said proudly.
"It's been almost 20 years since I have been in Japan, yet the love for me was still overflowing. I can say that it is truly a blessing that through two to three generations of fans, the energy and vibes were still there — even more than before!"
According to Shabba, "performing in Japan after such a long time was revitalising... I felt re-energised in every way imaginable — body, mind and spirit." The deejay concludes "Japan welcomed me with open arms....the red, gold and green carpet was set for the Emperor."
