Outstanding dancehall lyricist, Tanya Stephens returns to the University of the West Indies (UWI) but not for a lecture this time for a colourful musical delivery to graduates of the UWI.
On Friday August 12 Tanya along with Freddie McGregor, Ernie Smith and LUST are scheduled to perform at the UWI Mona Alumni Reunion Dinner and Show, on the graduation lawn.
Graduates, families and friends will be taken on a musical journey, Through the Decades of fun, revelry and great friendships. The event forms part of the 2011 UWI, Mona alumni reunion week of activities, August 10-14. Reunion Week, dubbed Through the Decades, is an initiative of graduates of UWI, Mona, and is geared toward rekindling and strengthening connections amongst alumni, between the alumni community and UWI.
All proceeds from the Reunion Week go directly towards funding scholarships, bursaries and meal vouchers for needy students.
The five-day long slate of activities also features an opening ceremony and reception at the Olde Still Ruins. On Thursday, August 11, a campus expo and tours, begins at 12 noon, to bring alumni up to date on developments and innovations in research. On Saturday August 13, the Mona Bowl will be the venue for Triple P sports day. Activities include a 20/20 cricket match hosted by Ambassador Courtney Walsh.
A number of hall specific activities, planned by alumni, will enliven the week; these include beach lymes, drink-ups, hikes, hall outreach/beautification projects. Reminiscent of UWI days Final Fete which has been a time-honoured tradition is scheduled for Saturday, August 13 at the Taylor Hall dining room with DJ Arif Cooper.
The Reunion Week of activities culminates on Sunday, August 14 with two events at the historic UWI chapel. In the morning there will be a Thanksgiving Service at 9am and in the afternoon, an organ recital featuring the celebrated organist Dr Olukola Owalabi.
