Several vendors in down town Kingston took to the streets in a March and protest against a police operation today.
Police mounted a massive operation in the down town area, where they cleared
the roadways of debris and illegal vending material.
they also kept vendors away from no vending areas.
On the back of the police presence the JPS disconnected some 300 illegal supplies.
Police say they also recovered a high powered weapon during the operation.
In the early morning vendors stayed behind police barricades and observed
their stalls had been removed from their usual place on the sidewalks
and middle of some streets, as police controlled much of the downtown
market district.
later though, the vendors rallied and marched through the streets as they
accused the authorities of seizing their goods while not providing them
with a suitable market.
Tension rose when vendors started intimidating shop owners urging them to pull
down their shutters. And it got hotter when fires were set to two big
stalls that burned uncontrolled.
Police are maintaining a strong presence in the area, which remains under a curfew until 1:00 a.m. am on Saturday.
