He took on music production only months ago, but already Buju Banton's son, Markus Myrie, has released his first song.
The song, Dem, is a collaboration with Ninja Kid, released about a month ago.
Speaking with THE STAR, Myrie said the song was initially intended to be a solo effort. But after doing his part, Ninja Kid heard the rhythm, did a separate song and then suggested the songs be combined.
Young Myrie explained that he has been singing and deejaying long before he decided to start producing professionally in October last year.
"Being in music, eventually you are going to try other stuff," he said.
still on production
And based on the response Myrie has been getting from Dem, "you can look out for other releases down the line," he told THE STAR.
But for now, most of his attention is still on production.
"I like both of them but right now, I am more comfortable producing because I am kinda shy," he said, laughing.
On the production side, Myrie recently released the 'Mattrass' rhythm, which he says has been gaining traction in the streets. The rhythm features 11 songs from artistes such as Beenie Man, Aidonia, Blak Ryno, Ninja Kid, Spice, Flexxx, Miss Ting and others.
"The rhythm is getting heavy rotation. It has a buzz in the street. All the songs on it are raw but all of them have radio edits," he said.
According to Myrie, his career as a producer has been moving more quickly than he expected.
"Things have been going really fast. Where I am at, a lot of people would not get here this fast, so I am grateful," he said.
He added that he has been building close relationships with artistes.
"The segregation in dancehall really doesn't help. I work with people who are enemies," he told THE STAR.
While being the son of a reggae legend does have its merit, Myrie says he needs to work hard as well.
"That is going to give me some of the attention and might make them listen but that doesn't mean they are going to work with me. It has to be good quality work. I have to build my own relationships. Being Buju's son, it is not as easy as everyone would think," he said.
