In an industry where sex sells, more dancehall artistes and fans are accepting and becoming liberal about oral sex.
Probably sparked by the increase in the number of 'freaky' songs by Vybz Kartel, many artistes are now openly singing about a more risqué lifestyle.
While male artistes had previously openly sang about receiving oral sex, more female artistes are now also boasting about this in their lyrics.
Artiste CéCile received backlash after releasing her song, Do It To Me Baby, several years ago, and artiste Lisa Hyper was also chastised after images of her were released on the Internet participating in oral sex.
Fast forward to 2013 and at least three female artistes have revisited the topic of oral sex, citing their love of either performing or receiving it.
However, there is far less resistance to those advocating the act. Instead, it seems they have received the stamp of approval from dancehall. The women believe this is an indication of a new dancehall paradigm.
Up-and-coming dancehall artiste Angelina performed her single Head Mistress at Sting 2012. The song, which blatantly explains her oral sex experiences, was well received by the audience.
"I am always confident in things that I do. We were discussing taboo topics, and I decided to do a song about oral sex. Ninety per cent of people in Jamaica take part in oral sex but are afraid of speaking about it. Look at Nicki Minaj, she raps about being a lesbian and oral sex but they are ok with it," Angelina said.
She added that Jamaicans are now more liberal.
"I received some bashing on YouTube and a few websites. But, some people love it and a seh leave the girl alone. As a businesswoman I was skeptic to record the song knowing what people might say, but I am satisfied based on the attention that it brought to my music. People will always have negative things to say, hopefully I can clean it up and make it into a hitÉI just think by the next 10 years Jamaicans will be more liberal with their sexuality. Everybody is coming out of the closet now," she said.
Destiny, a former Magnum Kings and Queens contestant, also released a single titled L.O.V.E in which she dabbles in the topic of oral sex.
"Dancehall has changed. You still have a few people who sey dem nuh duh certain things, but people are now more open minded. Vybz Kartel with the Freaky Gyal thing, when him sing that song him set a platform fi the females feel free to speak up, because Kartel don't discriminate. People just have to become more open-minded. It's still a touchy issue for men because they don't want to admit certain things, but its ok for us females to say we do it," she said.
Recording artiste Tiana also did a remake of Vybz Kartel's Freaky Gal pt3, in which she expressed her love for receiving oral sex.
According to her publicist Carlington Wilmot, sex sells.
"To me people are beginning to understand that it's entertainment. If you are a freak you will appreciate it and if you are not then you won't. Dancehall involves controversy and when you have people gossiping about you, it's good for you. The business is already difficult for the women suh dem haffi just duh dem thing and get a hype. There are more important things for people to worry about than sexual views," Wimot said.
