Denroy Morgan Walks Free From Ganja Charge

Veteran reggae entertainer Denroy Morgan is now a free man.

The patriarch of the musical reggae band, Morgan’s Heritage who was arrested in the Bronx, New York on September 14, 2011 and charged with possession of 25 pounds of marijuana walked out of the US District Court in Manhattan, receiving only 90 days probation and a court filing fee of US$25.

Denroy Morgan was initially facing a jail term of up to 20 years and fines of up to US$300,000. He was caught leaving a house with a package in the Bronx by a narcotics officer during a surveillance that had not targeted him.

The case was eventually dropped by the Bronx Supreme Court after an indictment was filed by the Federal Government charging him with possession and distribution of marijuana.

Denroy Morgan's lawyer successfully negotiated a guilty plea to a misdemeanor possession with district judge.

The attorney argued that Morgan had no intention to distribute the marijuana for profit but he bought it for spiritual use. The Prosecutor was in agreement with the deal therefore, the case is now closed.

Singer Denroy Morgan garnered international fame with his 1981 Billboard hit single "I'll Do Anything For You".
