With the information age rapidly taking its place in Jamaica, local actors have found a new avenue to showcase their talents. Local producers Big Dreams Jamaica have managed to successfully tap into the YouTube audience with their online sitcom Kong Fu Kartel, receiving over 50,000 views and counting.
The STAR spoke with Marlon 'Bad X Tha Boss' Morgan, director of the film, and according to him it was just for fun.
"We never knew it would reach so far, the 3G and the 4G thing really work in our favour because it's obvious that everybody has Internet now," he said.
The film features a protagonist called Kong Fu Kartel, who plays on the life story of popular dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel , ranging from his feud with Aidonia to his alleged skin bleaching and controversial fallout with business partner Corey Todd.
The character is played by Kerryo 'X Ray' Brown, also the brother of Morgan.
"We a duh acting from high school. At Bog Walk High wi always mash up drama class, but this is our first production so when we found out that we were getting a lot of hits on YouTube we were surprised," Morgan said.
The initial casting consisted of mostly amateur actors.
However, Morgan disclosed that since the showing of the film, other actors have been showing interest.
"People from all over the country a call sey dem waah participate, some even say that they want to sponsor clothing for the actors," he said.
According to the director, he and his brother are gradually becoming celebrities due to the huge fan base Kong Fu Kartel as acquired.
"It gives us much popularity, especially my brother (Kong Fu Kartel) because he is the main actor. When him guh on the road people always a call him Kong Fu Kartel and him just duh two kick and mek dem feel happy," he laughed.
Morgan believes that with sponsorship and the right equipment, he and his team could make money from the popular sitcom.
"I think we could make money from it because Jamaicans love comedy. If we get some sponsorship and good quality camera it can go far, even Centerstage we can go with it right now," he said.
Morgan said even during the shooting of each scene, a huge audience always shows up.
"When people hear that Kong Fu Kartel shooting, they always come out to watch it and laugh. Sometimes even the actors tend to laugh because they get distracted by the audience who are always laughing at some joke or another," he said.
The sitcom currently has parts one to three and is without expletives. According to Morgan, the goal is to appeal to all.
"We maintain a clean content because we want to attract everybody, even the granny can sit and watch Kong Fu Kartel and nuh complain," he said.
The lead actor 'X Ray', aka Kong Fu Kartel, is currently in discussion with a private company to act in an advertisement due to his exposure on Kong Fu Kartel.
To keep up with the adventures of Kong Fu Kartel, the YouTube page can be found at 'Big Dreams Jamaica' on YouTube.com or Join the 'Kong Fu Kartel' Facebook page.
"Vybz Kartel's life is comedy so it provided the right script for the film, we just want more sponsorship and the results will be greater," Morgon concluded.
