Deejay told to pay for damages

Embattled Dancehall Deejay Vybz Kartel was yesterday ordered to pay $15 million in damages to a promoter who filed a suit against him after he failed to perform at a concert in Turks and Caicos Island in August 2009.

The order was made in the Supreme Court by Judge Martin Gayle at a hearing to assess damages in the breach of contract case.

THE STAR understands that Jamaican promoter Alton Salmon filed the suit.

THE STAR further understands that on December 23, 2009 Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer, was served with the court documents.

However, he failed to file acknowledgement of service or to make any attempt to defend the suit.

A default judgement was entered against Kartel and the matter set for assessment of damages.

The deejay, who has found himself in trouble with the law in recent months, has several matters before the court.

He is charged with two counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, illegal possession of firearm and possession of ganja.
