Konshens is tipped as being the potential deejay of the year for 2012 by several media personalities. Other familiar names also came up, among them Tifa for best female deejay, and Cham for best comeback artiste.
FIWI choice co-host Sasha Bling believes I-Octane should receive the best reggae artiste accolade this year.
"I think he was consistent with songs like I L.O.V.E.Y.O.U and so forth. He might not be the man of the industry but he held his own even with the baby- mother drama, and everything he touched turned to gold," she said.
Sash Bling picked Konshens as her favourite to win the deejay of the year accolade and Tifa for the best female deejay. She also believes Cham should be the comeback artiste of 2012.
"Konshens started the year right and he maintained that strength right through. He kinda surprised me with the slack video, but I would give it to Konshens," she said.
Programmes producer at HYPE TV Talisa Taylor shared a slightly different view. According to her, Bounty Killer is her deejay of the year.
"I think Bounty Killer has had a good year, he is still pushing his new talents and he proved his relevance right through this year, so he is definitely number one. I would say Tifa for female dancehall artiste because she has been attacked from several aspects of the industry and she defended herself tastefully and that shows her strength as a female. While for reggae artiste, I would say Chronixx, he is young and has chosen a positive path with deep conscious music. He should definitely be the best reggae act," Taylor said. She also picked Cham for the comeback artiste of the year.
Producer/artiste and media personality Sanjay Rammanand also had Konshens as his deejay of the year pick.
"Mi woulda give Konshens, to me he has had the most steady and consistent hits of the year. Tommy Lee (Sparta) had his share but he did not have as much commercial success. Tommy Lee should get new artiste of the year and for reggae artiste of the year it would be between Tarrus Riley and Christopher Martin. For song of the year, I would say Bruck It Dung, it is definitely one of the biggest songs of the year and for producers it would be between Chimney Records and Teetimus. On the female side of things, I would pick Tifa or Lady Saw as female deejay, mi love deh Heels On song deh," Sanjay said.
Host of TVJ's E-Prime Deborah Bissoon says the year was not very productive and that the shining stars were few.
"I hope next year picks up but these are my picks. Comeback artiste is Bounty Killer or Aidonia and male artiste of the year is Konshens. He was the most consistent with his craft, except for that one questionable video. His presence was felt both locally and internationally. For the females Tifa, because she is most resilient and kept going even in the cacophonous environment. For reggae, I say Romain Virgo. The boy can sing, he has made a name for himself and there is only upward movement for him," Bissoon said.
Chimney Records, Cashflow and Teetimus were the popular producers on the lips of the selected media personalities.
