A massive fire at the Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, St James last night, resulted in the delay of two airlines and damage to the All Jamaica Airline Services (AJAS) terminal.

The fire, which was later contained by fire personnel who responded quickly to the blaze, lasted approximately 45 minutes. No one was injured.

A representative from the Freeport Fire Department told THE STAR that a total of six fire engines were dispatched - four units from the Freetown Fire Station, and two from the Ironshore Fire Station - to out the blaze.

THE STAR gathered that fire personnel were called to the scene, near the AJAS crew room on the MBJ compound at approximately 9:05 p.m., after a huge blaze was seen coming from a section of the airport.

Confirming the incident, Elizabeth Scotton, chief commercial officer, Sangster International Airport, told our news team: "we had a structural fire in the crew quarters of a ground handler's terminal, adjacent to the main terminal building, but not attached. There was nobody in the building. Our emergency services on site responded immediately. The St James Fire Brigade came in immediately and contained the fire very quickly."

Two airlines were reportedly briefly delayed.

"We had held two aircrafts. Jetairfly bound for Brussels and Condor bound for Frankfurt. They were delayed for about 15 minutes," Scotton added.

AJAS reported that last night's fire was not expected to affect its operations today.

Up to press time, the cause of the fire was not ascertained.
