Dancehall artiste David 'Mavado' Brooks is setting the record straight regarding his recent collaboration Cheat On Me, which features fellow dancehall artiste Spice.
According to Mavado, his Mansion Records up-and-coming female artiste ShakOne was originally intended to be featured on the song, however, her vocals were replaced on the track without his consent.
Mavado says he recorded his part of the song and added ShakOne's vocals, before submitting the recording to the Jamaica-based producers. However, to his surprise, the final product featured Spice instead.
"No disrespect to Spice whatso-ever. Me and Spice have been cool for years and she's a great artiste, but the record was never intended for her to be on it," Mavado said.
Mavado says ShakOne was robbed of the exposure which he intended to give to her via the song. However, Spice is not to be blamed.
"ShakOne a my artiste and me say me a help buss her as a young unknown female in the business and the man dem just take her off the record and didn't say a word to me. I doubt Spice is even aware of the whole story because I am sure she remembers the days of being a young artiste trying to get a break, as I do. So for anybody to take off an artiste off a song is a big disrespect," The We The Best signed artiste continued.
"I have too much respect for Spice to think she would knowingly do that. Imagine as a young artiste you feel like you might buss now because you have a song with Mavado, and then you turn on your radio and hear someone else singing instead of you?"
Mavado says he is saddened by the outcome of the song, however, he holds no grudges against the producers, and is hoping to hear an explanation as to why the vocals had to be switched.
Cheat On Me was released over three days ago and has already received over 9,000 views on YouTube.com. Spice is currently on tour in Europe and was unavailable for comment.
Mavado was recently freed of an assault charge in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. The court was told that the matter was settled at mediation and as a result the complaint was withdrawn.
