Roach and Justus. - Curtis Campbell
Dancehall producer Justus Arison is riding high on the success of his Overproof rhythm. The producer already sees the possibility of copping the Rhythm of the Year award, and boasts the strength of international R&B singer Daniel Beddingfield who recorded the single Sometimes You Just Know on the rhythm.
The producer says that he has been making rhythms since age 12, after being influenced by the work of Jeremy Harding, Dave Kelly, Fatis Burrel, Lenky and Dean Fraser.
Justus was also a disc jockey on a sound called Tempo that was based in the US. However his stint as a DJ was short-lived as he decided to concentrate fully on the production side of the music business, hence teaming up with dancehall producer Patrick 'Roach' Samuels to form JA Productions.
"Mi know Roach long time, wi use to live inna di same studio, about five years ago. A years wi a work together ... a nuff people not even know sey Roach a artiste," he laughed.
Justus says that music is more than just a job, but also his therapy.
"To build rhythm is like a therapy for me, music is like an escape and release for my frustrations," he told THE STAR.
The producer says that the success of the Overproof rhythm was unexpected, because he just made it as a regular habit.
"I build rhythms every day, and, to me, it was just a rhythm, but then I released the Jinx rhythm and when I saw the response I began to feel that I should go harder with the Overproof. DJ Liquid is a credible disc jockey and he said Jinx was his favourite rhythm, so that boosted my confidence too, cause I knew that Overproof was an even better material," he said.
The majority of the songs on the Overproof rhythm have been regarded as hits on the dancehall scene, but Justus says that's not enough. "The next step is to break overseas, because dancehall is in a slump, we want to create a next product like the Diwali rhythm. We already have a foot through the door, so we are working on it," he said.
JA Productions is also involved in video production, as one arm of the team is responsible for shooting the videos for some of the songs on the Overproof rhythm.
"I like good quality and so we have our own camera and shoot videos. I edited Navino's video, so we do a little bit of everything, but musically a just me an Roach," he said.
Though basking in the success of his second mainstream project, Justus says that he is still learning.
"Music is a school and I'm a real musician. I will always be learning until death. Right now, I'm not getting complacent, I'm just working, mi soon become all artiste, yuh neva can tell," he laughed.
Justus and Roach are gearing up to release the follow-up to the Overproof rhythm called Rum Fire, featuring the most credible artistes on the dancehall scene. The rhythm will be launched in December at Sting.
"Jamaica, look out for JA Productions, we have hol' heap a new things, there are endless possibilities," he concluded.
