Producer disappointed in Popcaan...after deejay declined to voice on new rhythm

Dancehall producer Elvis Redwood says Popcaan has refused to record on his latest rhythm the Aurora Skies, which is a follow-up to The Lost Angel rhythm. The Lost Angel rhythm brought the artiste relative international recognition with the single Only Man She Want.

According to Redwood, Popcaan was one of the first artistes to be given the rhythm, however, no song was forthcoming.

"Popcaan is not on the Aurora rhythm, I gave him the rhythm and he refused to be on it, I asked him why and he never gave me a reason," Redwood said.

While being cautious about making assumptions, Redwood expressed that he and Popcaan had no rift, however, he believes Popcaan's decision may have being motivated by his perception of loyalty.

"A Vybz Kartel give me the break and him neva tell mi fi be prejudice to nuh artiste, I am a producer and I don't pree side thing, so an artiste can't dictate who I must record, Tommy Lee and Sheba a Gaza artiste and dem record on the rhythm," he said.

According to a humbled Redwood, Popcaan asked which artistes were on the rhythm before deciding not to record.

"Him nuh give me a solid reason suh mi naah guh sey him sey this man or that man, but he asked me who else on the rhythm and then him sey him naah voice on it so I must give him two other rhythms. After that I left two new rhythms at UIM Records for him," he said.

Still remaining positive, Redwood believes even without Popcaan, the Aurora Skies rhythm will maintain his international success.

"Popcaan's biggest song was Only Man SheWant and I think he needs to realise that we have a musical chemistry, but I am looking past this because music does not end there and the Aurora will surpass that," he said.

The rhythm has already been added to international playlists such as Hot 97 in the United States and BBC's 1Xtra, and Redwood intends to continue building on the success of Only Man She Want.

"As a producer, I just have to continue choosing good rhythms, and the proper song. Sometime when a song is done I will even ask an artiste to do a next song just to get the right formula. I made connections internationally through the Lost Angel rhythm and the Aurora is getting the same response," he said.

Artistes currently on the So Unique Records produced Aurora Skies rhythm include Assassin, Flexx, Tommy Lee, Sheba, Khago, Gyptian and KipRich.

The STAR made several attempts to reach Popcaan for a comment, but his numbers went straight to voicemail.
