INCARCERATED dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel may still nab the 2011 title of Deejay of the Year. According to some industry players within the music fraternity, the self-proclaimed 'world boss' was already way ahead of rivals before his incarceration.
The STAR contacted representatives from some of the popular local charts, and the majority held the view that Vybz Kartel was locked in the number one spot.
According to Saudicka Diaram, programme manager at the weekly E-Strip videocountdown, her picks for deejay of the year would include Vybz Kartel, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Popcaan, and Aidonia.
"Vybz Kartel dominated by far. seven out of every 10 songs on the charts are Vybz Kartel, but Bounty Killer and Beenie Man had a little thing going on. Popcaan had a good year, but to me, it only started in the summer," she said.
Diaram also had I-Octane, Mavado, Jah Vinci, and Khago as her picks for the title of Singjay of the Year, with Tifa as female deejay.
Oniel Miller, executive producer at Fiwi Choice countdown, also had Vybz Kartel heading his list.
According to Miller, Vybz Kartel had more number ones than any other artiste locally.
He, too, felt that Tifa should be the female artiste of the year and expressed the view that I-Octane and Khago would run a tight race for singjay.
Representing the local underground, Stampede Lammie of Stampede Street charts said that Konshens, Popcaan, Aidonia, and KipRich had a decent year, but not enough to beat the efforts of Vybz Kartel.
"Dem cyaah guh round the work wey Kartel put in. no other deejay not even close. him gone with it again man," he said.
Veteran televisionpersonality and host of Video Alley Countdown Suzie Que also gave Vybz kartel the nod.
"I got some good songs from him this year," she said.
Suzie Que also said that she believed that Richie Stephens and Gentleman performed the best reggae song of the year with their collaboration called Live Your Life.
"There were other good songs, but I just feel like this song was very powerful," she told THE STAR.
She also highlighted the efforts of Fambo, Wayne Marshall, Macka Diamond, D'Angel, and Wayne Wonder.
However, CEO of Music Industry Achievers award show Queenie Doyley held a different view from the majority.
Queenie holds the opinion that Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, or Aidonia should be awarded the coveted title of Deejay of the Year.
"I feel like one of them should definitely be given the title because a dem gwaan wid things this year," she said.
Other artistes that were singled out as hot picks were Mavado for Singjay of the Year, Tifa for Female Deejay of the Year, and Justus and Roach of JA production for the Overproof rhythm.
Locally, there is no one award show that gives the ultimate title of Deejay of the Year. instead, there are several award shows and the public decides the winners.
Vybz Kartel won the Male Deejay of the Year title at the EMEs in early 2011, at the 2011 Youth View Awards, and also at the Stone Love Awards in 2010.
