The Red Label Wine/STAR People's Choice Awards was indeed a star-studded event.
Hosted at The Gleaner Company's Roof Garden last night, the awards show delivered quality performances in an environment of serenity and tranquility.
The show started with performance by local dancers Card Unit, who had the audience religiously tuned in to their moves as they danced to Chris Brown's Don't Wake Me Up among other songs.
By 8:15 p.m., it was time for hosts Dr Michael Abrahams and Lady Renae to announce the first award, which was Selector of the Year. This went to DJ Boom Boom, and in a rather comedic speech he said, "Give thanks to Father God, big up The STAR, big up the media. I couldn't do it without Harry Hype who plays my tracks. Big up Mavado, Rodney Pryce, Voicemail and Markus Records. Big up mi grandmadda, RIP. Deh one yah a guh pan mi dresser, big up Lasco, Milo and Tin Mackerel."
T.O.K gave a stunning performance of their new single, The Voice.
The audience was particularly impressed by Bay-C and his ability to pitch the high note in the hook. They also took the opportunity to denounce crime and violence.
Spice's performance of songs like A Yah Suh Great and Jim Screechie, were accompanied by a show of her whining skills, much to the delight of the audience.
Spice was later joined on stage by Tifa, as they performed Why Yu Mad.
The next category was Producer of the Year, which went to Markus Myrie. He thanked his supporters for their votes.
The legendary Freddie McGregor was the next performer and he belted out a series of classics from his catalogue. Songs like Push Come to Shove and Big Ship Sailing had patrons giving him encores.
The next award went to Gaza Slim for Female Deejay of the Year, while Bounty Killer, who got a rousing welcome, won Male Deejay of the Year. With smiles he said, "Good night, everyone. It's a very memorable day today. It's my mother's memorial. Big up my father, also big up The STAR and The Gleaner. This is a medal of honour, give thanks."
I-Octane wasn't a winner this time around. However, he gave a good performance with songs like Suffa Too Long, We Love the Vibes, Gyal a Gimme Bun and Missing You Like Crazy.
The Performer of The Year Award also went to Bounty Killer, who bragged about his "strong and loyal fanbase".
Bounty Killer also won the Dancehall Achievement Award, and for this he said, "Today is a very memorable day."
Other artistes who turned out to show support for The STAR Awards include Stacious, Stein, Voicemail, Sanjay, Delus, Villa Dutch, Ishwana, T.O.K and Danielle, aka D.I.
