Dancehall artiste Sean Paul is the latest Jamaican artiste to have his song featured in an international commercial.
Kia Motors has selected his Gimme Di Light as the soundtrack for their new promotional campaign advertising the 2013 Optima.
Gimme Di Light was a major hit record in 2002 and was also featured on Sean Paul's Dutty Rock. It was his first hit single, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, also becoming a top 20 hit in the Netherlands, UK and Canada.
Sean Paul's role in the commercial comes on the heels of the controversial Saturn Appliance commercial which was recently pulled from television stations in Germany due to numerous complaints from Jamaicans about the destruction of the Jamaican flag.
Jimmy Cliff was also featured in the international Volkswagen Super bowl ad campaign with his single Get Happy, another commercial which raised the eyebrows of critics who claimed that the ad was racist.
Several government ministers, however, supported the ad citing that it's a positive move for brand Jamaica. The result is that the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) now has its own campaign called 'Jamaica Me Happy'.
Minister of Tourism Wykeham McNeill publicly endorsed the Volkswagen ad saying, "As you are aware, the 'Get Happy' commercial has been causing quite a stir internationally, with persons expressing differing views about it both in the public media and on social-media platforms. I happen to like the advertisement and support it wholeheartedly, so much so that I encourage everyone to do as it recommends and tap into your inner Jamaican and 'get happy'," McNeill said at the launch of the 'Jamaica Me Happy' campaign.
In the midst of the Volkswagen controversy, Sean Paul had stated that he didn't think the ad was offensive.
His publicist, Jerome Hamilton, however, told The STAR that Sean Paul was unavailable to comment on his new ad endorsement when contacted yesterday.
