Up-and-coming record label Nicko Rebel Music recently scored big when mega digital music marketplace iTunes featured its production Looking Good in its 'New & Noteworthy' feature section for dance music.
Looking Good, a dancehall-house fusion song by Macka Diamond and distributed by Zojak Worldwide, was released on the iTunes platform on May 15 and was listed last week, with the likes of Rihanna, Kaskade & Skrillex, Marlo and Lady Chann & Kush Arora.
Nicko Rebel Music, based in South Florida, started as a sound system in 2004. After moderate success, the group produced mixtapes that were distributed globally and also featured on popular websites and entertainment forums. Since then, the label has been producing music for local and international artistes under the guidance of its founder, producer and engineer, Nicholas 'Nicko Rebel' Davis.
Davis, who credits his "innovative approach" to producing dancehall music for the steady growth of the label, said he was elated when he learned that Looking Good would be featured on the list.
"This is something every music producer and artiste wants to happen. Being featured on iTunes' 'New & Noteworthy' list is a great honour and is something that speaks to not just the popularity of dancehall, but that our music is able to cross any boundary and let people anywhere enjoy themselves."
He added that working with Macka Diamond on the track was effortless.
"She is the kind of artiste you really enjoy working with. It was really fun recording the track and I'm looking forward to working with her as we finalise plans to promote the single," he said.
For her part, Macka Diamond said she was "surprised and honoured" at the song's listing.
"We knew it was a good song. It is definitely a different feel than a run-of-the-mill dancehall tune, and Nicko is a talented producer so we make a good team. Recording the song was a lot of fun, and I guess that comes out in the lyrics and the music," the proclaimed 'money goddess' said.
The dancehall artiste also confirmed that there were plans to make a video for the song.
The iTunes 'New & Noteworthy' list is updated each Tuesday and is not limited to music. There are also 'New & Noteworthy' lists for movies, podcasts and applications.
