Sugar Minott's family face off over icon's estate

Maxine Stowe, the wife of late reggae/dancehall artiste Sugar Minott, is currently feuding with several of Minott's children over matters concerning his estate and his life-celebration event dubbed Sugar Minott Day Celebration, hosted by his eldest daughter Pashon Minott.

According to Stowe, Sugar Minott did not leave a will delegating how profits from his estate should be shared between his family members, and this presents problems as it relates to who has authority to host events at Youth Man Promotions on Robert Crescent, Kingston.

Stowe is arguing that, since Youth Man Promotions is a part of Minott's unresolved estate, Sugar Minott Day Celebration should not be hosted there, because it is a liability to both the promoter and the public. This argument has, of course, been met with a backlash from Pashon Minott and her siblings who are currently spearheading plans for the event.

problem with the estate

"There is a problem with the estate, the administrator general says nothing can keep at the venue because of the liability associated with the property. Since Sugar Minott's death, nobody was taking care of the bills and the maintenance, and this was communi-cated to the administrator general who came to the property about two weeks ago and gave all the beneficiaries the ruling that no event should be held there. But they ignored it and proceeded to promote the event," Stowe said.

Stowe, the mother of four of Sugar Minott's children, claims that she is merely trying to sort out the Minott estate using the right channels.

However, Sugar Minott's other children are arguing that she is trying to put a stop to the Sugar Minott Day Celebration.

"Because of my position, I am being attacked by some of the beneficiaries because they don't understand the complexity of the situation. So they think I am overstepping my authority ... they are free to host the event at another venue, just not at the one with all the liabilities," she said.

Pashon Minott accused Stowe of acting out of jealousy. According to the artiste/promoter, Stowe only sought to remove the show from the venue when she was told that her services were no longer needed on the planning committee.

celebration

"She doesn't live in Jamaica and don't even know how this place is run. She just come and sey the show can't keep if she can't be a part of it. I did not want to work with her because, last year when I approached her to be a part of the celebration, she said she wasn't interested in the event and would not contribute. So because of my decision not to work with her this year, she has decided to mash things up," Pashon said.

The artiste said the administrator general has no authority to stop the show from being hosted at Youth Man Promotions, because that privilege is yet to be granted by the court. She even questioned Stowe's authority, claiming that Sugar Minott told her that he was divorced in 2003.

"I just want her to stop picking on me, and the event is still on at Youth Man Promotions for May 25, 2013. So, all Sugar Minott fans roll out, and mi nah tek back mi chat. This is the second staging in Jamaica and I am resolute that it's keeping this year," she said.

Pashon says she already received the required permits for the day and night celebration and will proceed with all arrangements for the accompanying stage show . She also revealed that her lawyer is looking into the matter.
